PONCE, Puerto Rico -- Puerto Rico's second-largest city, and
the self-proclaimed "pearl" of the island's south coast, Ponce
proudly cherishes its traditions. This is happily and visibly
obvious at Christmastime and during the pre-Lenten Carnival, the
island's oldest and largest such festival.
A beloved traditional Puerto Rican handicraft that flourishes in
Ponce is the carving of "santos": wooden religious figures, mostly
of saints of the Roman Catholic Church, to which a majority of
