The Chain Around Philadelphia's Heart; Wanamaker, a Retail Landmark, Vanishes With Woodies

In the grand, five-story atrium at the center of the flagship John
Wanamaker department store in downtown Philadelphia, between the
hosiery and the scarves, there used to be a collection of memorabilia
devoted to a single theme: John Wanamaker.
There were racks of T-shirts, sweat shirts, cassette tapes, mugs,
neckties, stuffed animals, tote bags and books emblazoned with
symbols of the Philadelphia chain.
Now, however, all that remain are "a few neckties and some T-
shirts," said Jan Heppe, the store's general manager.
