ROXBURY -- There had been torrential downpours that week in mid- June, the second rainiest month in Boston history, with more than 11 inches recorded. Peggy Moore-Conley had gone out behind her three- story, brown-shingled house on Elm Hill Park to check the gutters, make sure everything was OK. It wasn't.

To this day, when she describes what she saw, her voice still registers the surprise it must have possessed the day she discovered a huge chunk of stone retaining wall had crumbled away, jeopardizing her backyard and the foundation of her 100-year-old house.
