HAWLEY -- The pileated woodpecker fluttered into Barbara Skelly's life one recent afternoon as a red-crowned conundrum: He had strong wings but couldn't fly.

The bird was discovered at dusk the night before, alone under a tree. A few blood droplets had stained the petticoat of white feathers beneath its wings. But he had a voracious appetite, and enough power to pinch a finger with his needle-nose beak.
