The life of Henry Purcell was pitifully short; it's now the 300th
anniversary of his death in 1695, and a mere 36 years have passed
since we were marking his birth. But in the short span between these
anniversaries, we've witnessed a revolution in the performance of
Purcell's music, and of baroque music in general.
In 1959, the use of period instruments was still in its early
stages. New York Pro Musica, and one or two other ensembles, used
harpsichords, recorders and viols in chamber...
