STATE PROPOSES LABELS ON CIGARS, WARNING OF HEALTH RISKS

Massachusetts would be the first state to require that cigars carry labels warning that they are "not safe alternatives to cigarettes" and detailing how much tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide they yield, under a proposal announced yesterday.

State health officials, brandishing data on a sharp increase in cigar smoking among young Massachusetts males, said labeling is needed to counter the recent marketing of cigars as a glamorous, classy, and safer alternative to cigarettes.
