MEMPHIS -- The average citizen just wanted the garbage picked
up.
And the average garbage man just wanted the mayor and everyone
else to know that his dignity wasn't on the ground with the maggots
and the flies and the potato peelings he had to pick up every day.
In 1968, in this town, the garbage workers went on strike.
They were making $1.55 an hour. They didn't have sick leave.
They didn't get vacation. You could attend a relative's funeral all
right, but you'd have been smart...
