GLOUCESTER -- By land or by sea, when tourists enter historic Gloucester Harbor this summer they will be greeted by giant icons of the sea -- steel sentinels set around the waterfront.

Six retired Coast Guard buoys, resurrected by the city through its Waterways Board, are scheduled to be placed on land to act as navigation buoys for tourists walking or driving the city's maritime trail.

The buoys, eight feet in diameter, 26 feet high and weighing 12,000 pounds, also will mark refurbished public landings where recreational boaters can tie up for an hour or two to drop off and pick up ...
