HENRY STEELE COMMAGER, 95; US HISTORIAN TAUGHT AT AMHERST

Henry Steele Commager, a prolific American historian and
champion of the US Constitution, died yesterday at his home in
Amherst. He was 95.
The retired professor of American history and American studies
at Amherst College had written extensively on the development of US
institutions. He described the US Constitution as the "greatest
monument to political science in literature."
The best known of Mr. Commager's many books was "The Growth of
the American Republic," which he wrote with Samuel Eliot Morison in
1931. He collaborated with Allan Nevins on the 10th edition,
