`Moonstone' casts very dim glow

Wilkie Collins's 1868 British novel "The Moonstone" is generally known as the first English-language detective story, the precursor to everything from Sherlock Holmes to "Cannon" and "Columbo." And indeed, Sunday night's "Masterpiece Theatre" features an adaptation of "The Moonstone" that feels not distant enough from "Cannon" and "Columbo," even if they're set centuries and countries apart.
