Harry Scherman believed that you could sell books the way Henry Ford sold cars. Accordingly, Scherman developed in 1926 a modern selling machine for the publishing industry: the Book-of-the-Month Club. Uniting an assembly-line distribution driven by the calendar and the clock with a selection mechanism designed to choose books representing "timeless values," the club tapped a new class of what came to be called middlebrow readers.
