New England was built on slavery

New England gets off lightly in cinematic depictions of slavery.
The movie "Glory" showed the black 54th Massachusetts Regiment being
led in the Civil War by the white Robert Gould Shaw. Now we have
"Amistad," where ex-President John Quincy Adams prods the Supreme
Court to free the Africans who took over a slaving ship.
Movies do not show that New England, despite such lore of
abolitionism, benefited tremendously from slavery. In his 1942 book
"The Negro in Colonial New England," Lorenzo Greene wrote that on the
eve of the American Revolution, slavery "formed the very basis of
economic life ...
