American composer Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901-53) always seemed to
be living in her own shadow. She was a leading figure among the
classical avant-garde of the 1920s, among the most inventive and
critically respected modernist composers of her time. In 1930, she
became the first woman to win a Guggenheim Fellowship for
composition, although her work was rarely performed in mainstream
classical settings.
Yet her most important and influential work came in the form of
two simple anthologies called "American Folk Songs for Children" and
