School calendar forces students to miss wages

Your Oct. 23 front-page article, "Debt burden soaring for US students," prompted me to write regarding this matter. Being the owner of a small business in a summer resort area causes me to look at another side of this issue. Why are schools, especially our universities, beginning and ending the school year so early?

Throughout the country the traditional summer season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. Businesses need the student employees, and students need the jobs, yet schools are out in early May ...
