How chinoiserie won the West
|
From England to Holland, from Germany to Portugal, people in
Europe couldn't get enough of what the French called chinoiserie, or
things decorated in the Chinese style. The English Mrs. Montagu was
one. In 1750 she wrote a glowing account of her new "Chinese"
dressing room, which was done up "like the temple of an Indian god."
Some years earlier, women in an Italian household had embroidered a
linen apron with Chinese motifs. There were butterflies and a
building that could pass for a pagoda. Among the birds was an
