Mary Sears, oceanographer, biologist at Woods Hole, 92

Mary Sears of Woods Hole, a world-renowned oceanographer, biologist, and author of marine publications, died Tuesday at her home of congestive heart failure. She was 92.

Miss Sears was born and raised in Wayland, graduating from the Winsor School in Boston. She received her bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from Radcliffe College.

During her graduate work and after graduation, she worked at Harvard with Henry Bigelow, the founder and first director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, where she started working summers as a planktonologist.
