Blue Cross shifts deal on centers MedPartners' negotiations shut out local company

In a surprise switch, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts
yesterday decided to negotiate the sale of its nine health centers
exclusively with MedPartners Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., shutting out a
local Waltham bidder.
"We have entered into a period of exclusive negotiation with
MedPartners on the sale of our health centers," the insurer said.
Last month, Blue Cross reached the same pact to deal exclusively
with Physician Quality Care Inc. of Waltham. But that pact expired
last month without a final sale, according to Blue Cross. Peter
