CAMBRIDGE -- When the Boston Symphony Orchestra wanted to
commission a new work to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the
Tanglewood Festival Chorus in 1995, the choice fell on Leon Kirchner,
one of America's greatest composers. Paradoxically, Kirchner, now
78, had not written a work for chorus since 1943, when he began work
on "Dawn," a setting of lines from Federico Garcia Lorca for chorus
and organ. "Dawn" was premiered on the concert that introduced
Kirchner to New York in 1949.
