Eugenia Arroyo remembers well the first time her son, Pedro, came home from Louis Agassiz Elementary School in Jamaica Plain with strange aches, asthma, dizziness, and fatigue.

That outbreak, more than three years ago when Pedro was in the second grade, started Arroyo's crusade for a safer environment at the Child Street school.

Arroyo is still fighting. Not for Pedro, now 11, who has been well since enrolled at the James Hennigan School, but for his younger brother and sister and dozens of other children and school staff who have routinely developed the same symptoms at the Agassiz despite ...
