Comet Hale-Bopp, sinking slowly toward the horizon and beginning to fade in brightness, has set an all-time visibility record for comets -- and could even double the previous mark. It may have set a second record as well, astronomers said yesterday.

This historic comet has been visible to the naked eye longer than any comet in recorded history, said astronomer Mark Kidger of the Instituto de Astrofisico de Canarias in the Canary Islands.
