Douglas Yeo celebrates serpent's lure

Douglas Yeo, the Boston Symphony Orchestra's bass trombonist, has mastered the serpent.

The serpent is an S-shaped instrument invented in 1590 to accompany chanting in churches; right through the 18th century there were four professors of serpent on the faculty of the Paris Conservatoire, and eight additional staff serpentists. More recently P.D.Q. Bach (Peter Schickele) composed a work for the 400th birthday of the serpent. "It looks like a serpent," Schickele said, "but it sounds like a cow."
