SWAMPSCOTT -- Bob Harris took his retirement as a designer and marketer of ladies' shoes seriously. He headed straight for golf courses here and in Florida.

That is until former first lady Barbara Bush fractured her left leg in a sledding accident on Jan. 13, 1991. Harris was moved by her injury and was getting a bit bored with golf. He did not design new shoes for her. Instead he designed and customized a set of red, white and blue crutches with a touch of gold.
