Harriman to Refund Millions to Two Trusts; Move Designed to Avoid Conflict With IRS

U.S. Ambassador to France Pamela C. Harriman, who is embroiled in long-running legal disputes with the heirs of her late husband, W. Averell Harriman, over their inheritance, has promised to pay millions of dollars to two charitable trusts to try to avoid a conflict with the Internal Revenue Service.

Averell Harriman's heirs have alleged that his widow has misused the two trusts, which held $6 million to finance the activities of the W. Averell and Pamela C. Harriman Foundation. Lawyers for Harriman have said she will replenish those trusts even though she believes she has done nothing ...
