COMET MAN After all these years, Fred Whipple's still fascinated by dirty snowballs

At a meeting of astronomers in Texas a few years ago, Fred Lawrence Whipple suddenly tossed a loaf of bread over the heads of his puzzled audience. The bread tumbled lazily end-over-end -- just like the nucleus of Halley's comet tumbles through space, Whipple explained with delight as a volunteer snagged the missile. Not only that, he went on, but Halley's nucleus and a loaf of bread, have about the same density and approximately the same shape.
