Quasars portrayed as galactic gluttons Hubble sheds light on mysterious objects

New Hubble telescope pictures are helping astronomers unravel the
thorny mysteries of quasars, the brightest, most energetic and
enigmatic objects in the universe. The images reveal details of
where quasars live, what they eat and what gets them going,
fulfilling one of Hubble's major goals.
"Hubble has finally unmasked what quasars really are," said John
Bahcall, an astrophysicist at the Institute for Advanced Study in
Princeton who led one of two teams that made the observations.
The pictures lend strong support to the prevailing theory that
quasars are supermassive black holes -- objects ...
