Cardinal Bernardin is dead at 68

Cardinal Joseph L. Bernardin of Chicago, among the nation's most talented and respected Roman Catholic leaders, whose skillful diplomacy helped mediate some of the church's more explosive issues, died yesterday of cancer. He was 68.

Once touted as a papal candidate, Cardinal Bernardin earned worldwide admiration for the grace and equanimity with which he faced his death. He announced recently that he had decided to forgo chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer, and his health deteriorated rapidly.
