A. Alvin Cullum York, who died in 1964, was a Tennessee mountain boy
and conscientious objector who only reluctantly accepted US Army
service during World War I. On Oct. 8, 1918, York, then a corporal,
single-handedly killed 25 Germans and then forced the German
commander to order the rest of the battalion to surrender. During
the encounter, York, a sharpshooter hunter, used his technique for
hunting wild turkeys, always picking off the most distant German so
