`The Rescue of Penelope," a melodrama for speaker and orchestra, rescues the most substantial stretch of virtually unknown music by Britten. It was written as the incidental music for "The Rescue," an ambitious BBC dramatization of Homer's "Odyssey" by Edward Sackville-West in 1943. One listener was particularly impressed: George Bernard Shaw wrote, "{Britten's music} had style and great refinement. He handled his trumpets beautifully, and his manner was not the lawless post-Wagnerianism that now sounds so tiresomely old-fashioned, but in the tradition of Gluck, Berlioz and Chopin. It had ...
