Bridges deficient, says AAA Mass. spans called 2d worst in nation

Massachusetts bridges are in the second-worst condition in the nation, with more than half the spans physically deficient, according to a new American Automobile Association study.

Only New York is worse, with 63 percent of its bridges deficient, AAA said.

But aides to Massachusetts Transportation Secretary James J. Kerasiotes blasted the report as inflammatory and sensationalized.

And New England's top federal highway official said the report lumped together bridges that have weight restrictions and those that are merely old and not built to current design standards for width or traffic ...
