LONG BEACH, Calif. - They were polite, idealistic and sincere,
not the crowd one expects at a political convention. But do members
of the Reform Party have the killer instinct they need?
A third party in US politics is by definition a sometime thing.
Since the reelection of Abraham Lincoln in 1864, every third party
candidate has faded. The Reform Party, financed by Ross Perot, may
change that pattern, even if Perot himself hasn't.
The twangy Texas billionaire spent $62 million in 1992 and
millions more this year, but none of it, alas, on elocution lessons,
as his audience rediscovered ...
