Doric J. Alviani, 82; was founder of UMass Fine Arts Department

Doric J. Alviani, professor emeritus of music at the University
of Massachusetts at Amherst, died Friday of natural causes in the
Addison Gilbert Hospital, Gloucester. He was 82.
Born in Fall River, Mr. Alviani graduated from Salem High School
in 1930. He attended Boston University, from which he received
bachelor's and master's degrees. In 1962 he earned his doctorate in
music from the Union Theological Seminary School of Sacred Music in
New York City.
In 1938 Mr. Alviani founded the University of Massachusetts' Fine
Arts Department, which he headed until 1963. He continued to teach
