Mississippi's Lott is early pick in race for majority leader post

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Bob Dole's sudden announcement that he was
leaving the Senate has not only started a succession battle for
Republican leader, it also is likely to end the stalemate that has
stalled Senate action in recent weeks, senators said yesterday.
Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi, Dole's deputy in the Republican
Senate leadership, emerged as the favorite to become majority leader.
"Obviously Lott has an advantage," said Sen. William Cohen, the
Maine Republican.
"The race for majority leader is not dried, but I think it is
