Flight of legend -- or of imagination? A Byrd scion defends explorer's Pole log

The long-lost flight log of Adm. Richard E. Byrd has done more to
taint his North Pole trip of 1926 than whispers ever could, but the
explorer's Boston-area relatives have responded by embracing his
legend and questioning his critics.
Leverett Byrd, a grandson of the famed adventurer, rejects the
recent allegation that Adm. Byrd knew he had fallen short of the
pole on May 9, 1926, and altered the data to show he had flown to the
top of the world.
