Museum to sell art to save it Shelburne's critics deplore auction of masterpieces

SHELBURNE, Vt. -- The late Electra Havemayer Webb had a hankering for collecting Vermont knicknacks on a grand scale. Her keepsakes at the Shelburne Museum include a Lake Champlain steamship, 1,200 duck decoys, a lighthouse, 27 dollhouses, two dozen French Impressionist paintings, to name a few.

One of the things Webb did not leave behind was an endowment grand enough to care for the museum 49 years after it opened.

Now, museum trustees are drawing up a list of artifacts to sell this summer to create the $25 million endowment needed to care for the collection.
