Coast Guard cutbacks set

Last summer Martha's Vineyard fishermen and boaters rallied successfully to save the Coast Guard station in Menemsha, which the Coast Guard had slated to close last October as part of a $400 million downsizing.

The victory, however, may have been short-lived. The Coast Guard is planning to cut the station's staff from 21 last fall to 10 and reducing the fleet of rescue boats, said Tim Panovec, petty officer 3d class, a Coast Guard spokesman.

The cuts have already begun. Only 12 staffers are left, and the 41-foot rescue boat has been moved off-island. The only boats left are a 44-foot motor ...
