US Army completes bridge to Bosnia 660-yard span to serve as gateway for soldiers

ORASJE, Bosnia-Herzegovina -- In what officials are calling the largest US military bridging operation since the crossing of Germany's Rhine River at the end of World War II, US Army engineers completed a 660-yard bridge yesterday that will serve as the gateway for nearly 20,000 US soldiers headed to Bosnia to enforce the peace.

Shortly after 10 a.m., engineers who had worked in shifts through the night latched together the final pieces of a 13 1/2-foot-wide pontoon bridge over the Sava River, ending days of delays caused by flooding, icy supply routes and muddy riverbanks.
