Edmund Muskie dies; Senate stalwart was 81

Edmund S. Muskie, the four-term US senator from Maine who saw his 1972 presidential hopes dashed amid falling snowflakes in New Hampshire and who, eight years later as US secretary of state, oversaw the negotiations that brought home the 52 American hostages from Tehran, died yesterday in Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Muskie, who was 81, had suffered a heart attack last Thursday following triple bypass surgery.
