QUINCY -- The Salvation Army marched into Quincy 100 years ago, 11 years after the advance guard, Capt. Annie Shirley and a small band of Christian soldiers, arrived from England to "open fire" on Boston with a campaign of "soup, soap and salvation" for the region's needy.
