Battered but unbowed, the Galileo spacecraft will finally reach Jupiter this week, marking the end of a roundabout, six-year journey and the beginning of a lengthy exploration of the giant gas planet and its motley family of moons.

Thursday afternoon, a highly sophisticated probe that separated from Galileo's main structure last July will plunge at least 370 miles deep into the atmosphere of the planet -- the solar system's largest -- transmitting detailed data until the probe is destroyed by heat or pressure.
