A.R. Ammons Wins Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize

A.R. Ammons, an English professor at Cornell University, was
named winner of the $75,000 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize for 1995 today.
Joseph Parisi, editor of Poetry magazine and head of the selection
committee, called Ammons a visionary in the tradition of Walt Whitman
and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
"Ammons's knowledge of the natural sciences -- a rare attribute
among American poets -- infuses his moving lines with a sense of
wonder at the complexity of the world and humankind's place in the
universe," Parisi said.
