For Latin's students, quota is sensitive topic

It is 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and the stairwells and hallways at Boston Latin School are teeming with students rushing to get home or to their after-school clubs.

The teen-agers, a few sporting blue- or red-dyed hair and wearing the latest in baggy teen-age fashions, are not the young men in suit jackets and ties who dominated this 360-year-old academic sanctuary, Boston's premier public examination school, until girls were admitted in 1972.

These days, the students -- more than 2,300 of them in grades seven through 12 -- are a vibrant melange of ethnicities, cultures and incomes. But ...
