`I'm just jumping in at the deep end. Again," says David Bowie, of his latest venture in a roller-coaster career. He says this not with a weary sigh, but with a slight laugh.

Throughout more than two decades of recording, Bowie has been at the forefront of glam rock, fashioned a genre he called "plastic" soul, pushed the art-rock boundaries with collaborator Brian Eno and skated over to superstar status a decade back with "Let's Dance." You try to pin one sound, or one identity, on him and he's moved on.
