J.P. Grace Dies; 50-Year Head of Family Business

J. Peter Grace Jr., 81, the former W.R. Grace & Co. board chairman who was ousted last month after a half-century heading his family's company, died April 19 at a hospital in New York. He had cancer.

Mr. Grace was a grandson of William Russell Grace, who had fled Ireland's potato famine, served two terms as mayor of New York and founded Grace & Co. in 1854.

Mr. Grace was born in Manhasset, N.Y., and raised in a Long Island mansion with 62 servants. He graduated from Yale University before joining the family company in 1936. He guided Grace & Co. from an ailing Latin American…
