Q. How long do I need to work to become vested for Social
Security disability benefits?
A. The amount of work you need depends on your age at the time you
become disabled. As a young worker under age 24, all you need is a
year and a half of work in the past three years to qualify for
benefits. At age 31 and later, you would need five out of the last
10 years.
Q. I've just turned 21 and landed my first job. Should planning
retirement be the last thing on my mind at this point?
