Recount Gives Whittington 1-Vote Victory in D.C. Council Race

Eydie D. Whittington squeezed to victory yesterday in the race to
fill the vacancy on the D.C. Council created when Marion Barry became
mayor, winning a recount of ballots cast in the May 2 special
election by a single vote.
Whittington, a marketing director for a downtown law firm,
defeated community activist and former Barry aide Sandy Allen by 813
votes to 812 votes, according to the daylong recount completed late
yesterday afternoon.
The result apparently ends what elections officials called the
closest council election in District history. But with an apparent
