George Romney, 88; ex-governor of Mich., presidential hopeful

George W. Romney, the three-term Michigan governor whose statement
that he'd been "brainwashed" about the Vietnam War helped scuttle his
1968 presidential hopes, died yesterday at his home in Bloomfield
Hills, Mich. He was 88.
A son, G. Scott Romney, said his mother found Mr. Romney collapsed
on a treadmill. The local medical examiner's office attributed his
death to natural causes.
Mr. Romney's other son, W. Mitt Romney, was the Republican
nominee nominee from Massachusetts for the US Senate last year,
losing to incumbent Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
