NEW YORK -- Is New York going through a niceness explosion?

Some of the natives are afraid so.

The city government has embarked on a campaign to get New Yorkers to be friendlier, especially to tourists. Posters plastered inside hundreds of subway cars warn, "Turn Your Back on Tourists and They'll Turn Their Backs on New York" and "Instead of Making a Wisecrack, Crack a Smile."
