Assyria at its gloriest -- and goriest
|
NEW YORK -- There is always a staggering amount of art on view in
Manhattan's major museums, a variety unequaled anywhere else on the
planet. Current and recent shows rank from not-worth-the-trip to
fabulous. In the former category is the just-closed Whitney
Biennial, an incoherent survey organized by Whitney Museum curator
Klaus Kertess. About the best that can be said of it is that it
wasn't as noxious as the previous Biennial -- the first under the
reign of David Ross, erstwhile head of Boston's Institute of
Contemporary Art and now director of the Whitney. That show saw Ross
