No simple answer on use of vaccine for chicken pox

Ever since the long-awaited chicken pox vaccine won federal approval in March, parents have besieged pediatricians, health officials and the manufacturer -- Merck & Co. -- to find out if their children should be immunized.

The answer, however, is not simple.

Babies 12 to 18 months old should routinely get the vaccine, the American Academy of Pediatrics says. So should all children, adolescents and young adults who have not had chicken pox, because the disease can be more serious in older people.
