Frederick Douglass may have been born a slave, but he was not one to pay undue deference to any man, not even the president of the United States.

Douglass -- who died 100 years ago today -- was a great leader and a brilliant orator who was rarely afforded the same standing as his white counterparts. Abraham Lincoln was the exception. He invited Douglass to his Inaugural reception at the White House, where Lincoln referred to him as "my friend." He once told Douglass: "there is no man in the country whose opinion I value more than yours."

Yet Douglass had no illusions about the 16th president. ...
